Why replace when you can repair?

Three times per year community members gather in Port Hope to keep things out of the landfill at Repair Cafe.

From broken appliances, lamps, textiles, bikes, furniture, and beloved toys, almost everything is salvagable at Repair Cafe!

The first such event took place at St. John’s Anglican Church in the winter of 2020. Organizers and volunteer fixers were overwhelmed by the interest from neighbours who came en masse to have their stuff repaired. Unfortunately the COVID pandemic meant a couple of years before the event could be held again. Repair Cafe was back in 2023 and is now being hosted three times a year!

This now regular event is not only helping neighbours to hold on to household items that they value, but is fostering a broader conversation in the St. John’s community and beyond about how we consume goods. Why do we lean towards tossing broken or damaged items into the trash and replacing with something shiny and new? For the visitors to Repair Cafe, the answer is often that they just don’t have the skills personally to fix things themselves.

Volunteer fixers range from professsionals to regular folks who have skills to share and a passion for keeping things in working order and out of the landfill.

Repair Café Port Hope is part of the Repair Café international movement which has as its goals repair over replace to reduce waste and connecting community through the sharing of skills.
